My Very Own Picasso...Times Two

My Very Own Picasso...Times Two

Sure, the Picasso Exhibit is still here at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond until May 15th, but who needs to drive into the city when I have My Very Own Picasso...Times Two!

My kids had their very first Art Show this past Thursday night here in Glen Allen and they proudly showed off their works to mom and dad. We are very impressed!

Is This Richmond Home in a Good School District?

Is This Richmond Home in a Good School District?

Ah. This is a popular question. And a difficult one to answer. This question is very subjective and my standard of what makes a good school may not be the same as your standard by which you measure. Because of this, Realtors tend to shy away from such questions. We wouldn't want you to make one of the biggest investments of your life based on our opinion! BUT, we can help you locate some great resources for which you can evaluate and make your own, informed decision.

Below you will find some links to Richmond Area Schools:

Henrico County Public Schools
Hanover County Public Schools
Chesterfield County Public Schools
Richmond Public Schools
Goochland County Public Schools

In addition to these local, Richmond Area School links, you may also wish to check out Great Schools, a website on school performances.

Still need more information on Richmond Area Schools? Just shoot me an email and I would be happy to send you some articles that I have compiled from local newspapers and magazines rating many of the local schools in Richmond and the surrounding counties.

Broadway in Richmond

Broadway in Richmond

When we lived in Philadelpia one of my favorite things to do with my husband was hop the train to New York City and take in a Broadway play. We have been fortunate enough to see several "popular" shows such as Wicked and The Producers and I will NEVER forget the very first show we saw - The Lion King!

I miss those days, but I also would not trade living in Richmond for anything. There is just so much to do here INCLUDING taking in some great shows via Broadway in Richmond! Their line up for this season is FABULOUS and I really hope my husband and I can find a sitter and recreate the magic of the Big Apple!

Below are a few shows that are on the top of my list and I hope you add them to yours:

Wicked, October 5th - 16th, 2011 (yeah, I have seen this one but it is SO WORTH seeing again!)
South Pacific, December 16th - 17th, 2011
The Lion King, February 15th - March 11th, 2012 (may I have seconds please?!)
The Blue Man Group, April 27th - 29th, 2012 (Now I won't have to go to Vegas to see them! Wait. Is that a good thing?!)

There are several other shows on the line-up, so be sure to check out the website: Broadway in Richmond

How to Deal with a Neighbor Dispute

How to Deal with a Neighbor Dispute

We all imagine living in harmony with our fellow neighbor. In a perfect world we would share a drink over the fence every Friday night or break bread on Saturdays with a cookout. But, we all know the reality that we don't live in a perfect world and sometimes we are going to disagree. It's human nature.

So, what do you do if you find yourself in a disagreement with your next door neighbor? Here are a few suggestions from Revolution Health:
Date updated: August 09, 2007
By Dan Seligson
Content provided by Revolution Health Group

  • Communicate. Experts universally agree that disputes escalate when sides fail to address each other directly. Knowing your neighbors goes a long way toward avoiding and diffusing disputes. Make an effort to communicate face to face, rather than sending an angry letter or banging on a wall when you're upset.

  • Don't assume ill will. Neighbors might not know what effect their actions are having on those around them. Sometimes just letting them know a party is too noisy or a trash can is blocking your driveway in a friendly way can be enough to derail a feud before it starts.

  • Get in early. If something a neighbor is doing bothers you, it's best to notify him or her of the problem as soon as possible. Early intervention can make a huge difference, says University of Baltimore professor John Windmueller, Ph.D., who teaches conflict resolution.

  • Mediate, don't litigate. Calling the police or suing a neighbor might offer a solution to a neighborhood stalemate, but it doesn't solve the problem of how you will live daily near this person in the future. Mediation with a neutral third party leaves options open after the dispute has been resolved, experts say, and that can lead to healthier interactions in the future. Your obnoxious neighbors might seem unable to negotiate, but experienced mediators say there are few people who are truly unreasonable. Mediation is effective more than 70 percent of the time, according to experts, and most importantly, it relies on people (that's you and your neighbor) problem solving — with help.

  • Keep a local dispute local. The key to successful resolution is having people from the community solve community disputes, says Robin Seigle of the San Diego-based National Conflict Resolution Center. That makes sense, but oftentimes neighbors choose to call the police or seek action in court"In a court setting, cases often end up with a restraining order. In those cases, it doesn't give people chances to problem solve. It only focuses on why the other person should be punished in some way," Seigle says.
Chances are your state, county or even neighborhood has some connection to a conflict resolution center. After all, the police, legal system and code enforcement officers are almost always overburdened and would rather you and your neighbor work it out without their help. To find a mediator near you, visit Mediate.com or look up "mediation services" in the Yellow Pages.

  • Know when to seek help. Although mediation in neighborhood conflicts has a high success rate, some neighbors might not be approachable using any of the recommended methods. "If there's a fear of safety, then there's a reason to call the police. If you think something violent could happen, don't take the risk," Seigle says. If you're afraid that your neighbor will resort to violence, you can have a conversation in a courthouse — where both sides get checked for weapons — or even over the phone — which, while not ideal, is better than not talking at all.

  • Mow the lawn! Scoop that poop! Shovel that snow! If you want good neighbors, it helps to be one. A remarkably high number of neighborhood disputes start with the little things — an unsightly lawn, ice on the sidewalk because someone didn't shovel, etc. Trees and shrubs growing out of control can impede on other property and cause a nuisance or safety hazard. A well-kept house can keep peace in the neighborhood.
Pets are another common source of feuds. Clean up after your animals and try to keep them on your own property. If your dog barks incessantly, consider keeping him inside at times when the barking might bother neighbors.

I would like to add, if you have an HOA it may be a good idea to consult with your board or community association leader. Usually a complaint can be made anonymously and a quick call or letter from the association to the offending neighbor reminding them of the rules and regulations can do wonders!

I hope you find these tips from Revolution Health helpful if you ever find yourself in this uncomfortable situation!

Happy Easter! We Are Blessed!

Happy Easter! We are Blessed!

What a beautiful day to celebrate Easter here in Richmond, Virginia. The sky is blue, the temperature perfect at 85, and the humidity is low. Can it get any better than spring in the RVA?!

My family started this magnificent day by waking up to a bounty left by the Easter Bunny! Thankfully, the Easter Bunny was smart this year and only brought one chocolate bunny for the kids...everything else in the basket was some sort of small toy or a "healthy" snack such as whole grain breakfast bars and low fat graham crackers. (I think the bunny knew our home had been invaded by too much chocolate as of late!)

After we checked our baskets we looked out the window to see the BIG present the Easter Bunny had left - a brand new, Creative Playthings Swing Set! With two swings, a teeter-totter, scoop slide, rock wall, and a picnic table, I think our family will be spending a lot of time in the great outdoors. (AND, the swing set was a HIT with not only my kids, but the entire neighborhood as well, lol!)

We then ventured to church for some worship and then back home to enjoy the day & break-in the swing!

Dinner is now in the oven (turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potato's, etc.) and the family is taking a much needed time-out to watch a movie. (I think we all got a little too much sun today!)

As we head into the evening we are looking forward to a little more time outside and then turning in early for the night so that we will be prepared for any new adventures the morning may bring. All good things must come to an end!

I hope this Easter is providing you with some precious time with YOUR family and that you take a moment to remember what this holiday is truly about.

Home Sweet Henrico with Keller Williams Realty wishes you a BLESSED Easter!

My Good Deed Has Gone

My Good Deed Has Gone

A few months ago a friend of ours here in the Richmond area asked if we could watch their dog while they went away on vacation. I JUMPED at the chance as I really want to add a second dog to our family, but my husband is not so sure. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show my husband that two dogs are not much more work than one dog.

So, last week Otis came to stay with us. This big, beautiful dog came bouncing into my home and fit in like a glove. He is fantastic. He is sweet, listens, and just melts your heart. During his stay with us he often would put his paw on my shoulder to show his friendship. He would also steal kisses as he has a very LARGE tongue and would grab you so you didn't know what hit you. He also has himself confused with a lap dog, making several circles and then settling on my lap like it is his home. Can you tell I am in love?

Otis's family is back from vacation now and we had to say our goodbye's. I knew my kids would be a little confused and upset, but I had no idea that I would feel that way. This big horse-dog made his way into our hearts and we will always welcome him with open arms. (He was THRILLED to see his family again so that made saying goodbye a little easier!)

My husband asked me this afternoon if we are going to get a second dog. To my surprise, he is open to it now and to my SHOCK...I am not so sure! And, I am not sure why I am not sure! Maybe because I miss Otis a bit. Or, maybe because the idea of another long term commitment is scary to me. But, I do know that having a dog in my life has been a blessing and somewhere in the near future we will add another fur ball to our family!

I am buying a new construction home but don't know which options to choose

I am buying new construction but don't know which options to choose

So you have decided to take the plunge and build a new construction home...CONGRATS! You are about to enter a very fun, and sometimes stressful, journey! If you chose to have a Realtor represent you and your interests, then you have a FABULOUS consultant who can help you navigate not only the sometimes confusing paper process (signing of contracts, inspections, etc.) but you also have an educated team mate who can help you select those finishes that will have the most appeal and bang for your buck!

Now, if you didn't select a Realtor to help you through this transaction, here are a few tips I give my clients:

*Think LOT. Location, location, location. Be sure to check out all of the available lots and weigh the pros and cons to each. What size in the lot? Will it be flat or have a steep slope? Are there any easements you need to be aware of? You can not move your home once it is built, so be sure you evaluate all possible scenarios when selecting where your home will sit!

*Think STRUCTURAL. The next place to spend your money is on things that you can not change down the road. Want a basement? Want a three car garage? Want an attic? Now is the time to be thinking long term and how you will want to utilize your place for years to come.

*Think KITCHEN and MASTER BATHROOM. Have some money left over in the budget after adding in your structural options? Then think about putting that into the kitchen and master bathroom. These are the most popular rooms in a home and will bring a good return on your investment. Go with an upgraded cabinet, a quality counter top such as granite or quartz, and upgrade your tile in the bathroom. There are lots of colors and styles to pick from, so have fun with it!

I hope you find these tips helpful and that you have smooth sailing on your new construction home buying journey!

And, don't forget to take a Realtor with you on the FIRST VISIT to a new construction sales office. If you visit and register without a Realtor, you may not be able to have one!

Turning a Development into a Neighborhood

Turning a Development into a Neighborhood

I have always been envious of those developments that do things together as a community. You know, the ones who have summer kick-off parties, community yard sales, and even Friday night cocktail hours. There is something so special about people coming together to celebrate nothing more than sharing a fence or belonging to the same HOA.

So, yesterday our little (and new) Henrico County community held it's first ever neighborhood party. It was an Easter celebration complete with a visit from the Easter Bunny himself (an unplanned "initiation" of a new neighbor, HA!), an Easter egg hunt, games with prizes, and of course, food, drink, and most importantly FELLOWSHIP! It was a little chaotic but fun none the less and I think those who actually participated are eagerly awaiting what is coming next!

The thing I realized is that it takes effort and some fun work turning a development into a neighborhood. It takes several people coming together to donate their time to plan an event. It takes others willing to bring a covered dish to share. It also takes willing participants who want more from their development than just four walls and stainless steel appliances. You know...they say it takes a village to raise a child...well, it's kind of the same concept.

We all had a fabulous time yesterday. In fact, the party that was scheduled from 1PM-3PM lingered long past our dinner times and even resulted in some sticking around, ordering pizza, and sharing yet another meal together. Now that is what I call a great start to a neighborhood!

Tornado Preparedness

Tornado Preparedness

WOW! That was a scary storm that just passed through the Richmond area. The rain was pouring, the wind was gushing, and the tornado watches and warnings were in effect. And me? Well, I had my ear glued to the outdoors listening for tornado warning sounds ready to sweep my kids and pets into the basement.

Tornado warning sounds? Yes! Did you know that right before a tornado is about to touch down you could hear something that sounds like a freight train, an airplane, or other load roar? This often is the case. In addition, there are other tornado warning signs according to FEMA, such as:
  • Dark, often greenish sky
  • Large hail
  • A large, dark, low-lying cloud  (particularly if rotating)
If you have discovered a tornado warning signs, please follow these tips from FEMA:
  • If you are in a structure - Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.
  • If you are in a vehicle, trailer, or mobile home - Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.
  • If you are outside with no shelter - Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding. Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location. Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter. Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries.
What do you do after the tornado and/or storm has passed? FEMA has the following advice:
  • Your first concern after a disaster is your family’s health and safety. You need to consider possible safety issues and monitor family health and well-being.
  • Check for injuries. Do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of death or further injury. If you must move an unconscious person, first stabilize the neck and back, then call for help immediately.
  • Be aware of new safety issues created by the disaster. Watch for washed out roads, contaminated buildings, contaminated water, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged electrical wiring, and slippery floors.
  • Inform local authorities about health and safety issues, including chemical spills, downed power lines, washed out roads, smoldering insulation, and dead animals.
Lucky for us, the storm passed without a tornado touching down near our home and we are only dealing with some slight flooding in our back yard. But, others were not so lucky in other areas and now have to sift through the damage and find the strength to move on. I hope by posting these tips you will find yourself prepared in the event of an approaching tornado.

For more tips and information on tornado's please visit: FEMA.

Crump Park in Henrico County

Crump Park in Henrico County

We have had some picturesque days here in the RVA as of late. Sure, we have had our share of rain too, but that just creates more green to enjoy the lovely outdoors! Yesterday, after wrapping up some appointments, I took the afternoon and away the kids and I went to Crump Park in Glen Allen. What a great place!

First, Crump Park is home to the Meadow Farm Museum - a historic farmhouse that often has demonstrations and exhibits, on select weekends, that showcase the life of Dr. John Mosby Sheppard, owner of Meadow Farm. It's a beautiful home rich in history and should not be missed! Be sure to stop by the gift shop as well!

Second, Crump Park has some great trails that are just waiting to be explored. In addition, there is a cute duck pond where you can view all sorts of animals including beautiful turtles. My kids especially like to sit there and dog watch.

Finally, Crump Park has a wonderful children's area that is complete with slides, swings, and even a little imagination train! My favorite part of the playground has to be the giant web that kids can climb...my kids just love pretending to be Spiderman and saving the day!

So put Crump Park on your list of things to explore here in the Richmond area - I know you won't be disappointed!

Be Prepared - Inventory Your Home

Be Prepared - Inventory Your Home

Having recently moved into our new home, I realized how much STUFF we have. And then it occurred to me just how much we have to lose!
Over the years, people accumulate a lot of things. Everything from televisions to furniture to precious heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. But, in the event of a catastrophe, like a fire, would you have the proper documentation to make a claim on some of these items? I don’t. And I am sure many of you don’t either.
But, no worries! The Insurance Information Institute has you covered with a FREE online software program that allows you to take inventory of all of your treasured items! Know Your Stuff Home Inventory® is easy to use and it’s website even has informative videos to help guide you through the process. What I like most about this inventory system is that it is online and can be accessed from anywhere! If you have an inventory sheet but it is in your home, will it still be there after the disaster?
I encourage you to take a look, sign-up, and start taking stock of your items! You never know when this information may come in handy!

Things to do in Richmond: Karaoke

Things to do in Richmond: Karaoke

I can not sing. Period. It's rather sad too because my father, aunts, and grandmother are all terrific singers. For as long as I can remember I have loved to sing and now really understand the definition of unconditional love as my family never had the heart to break it to me just how terrible I really am! (I just MAY have been the inspiration to the American Idol tryouts! HA!)

How about you? Can you belt out a tune like Mariah? Like Whitney? How about just Britney? No matter! If you love to sing, then here is your chance to do it in the RVA!

Tomorrow, April 12th, Weezie's Kitchen on Cary Street will be hosting Karaoke night with Katie of Nard's Professional DJ Service. Singing will begin at 9:30p.m. and admission is free!

Sticky Rice, on West Main Street, will also be hosting a Karaoke night tomorrow with Nard's Professional DJ Service and has the proud distinction of being named the 2010 Best Place for Karaoke by Richmond Magazine! The singing begins at 10:30p.m. and admission is also FREE!

So head on out for a night of fun and try not to make fun of those who just don't realize how bad they really are! (Who cares, right?  As long as they are having FUN!)

Pool Safety!

Pool Safety!

Today was beautiful here in Richmond! The sun was shining, the shorts were on, and kids could be seen playing out in the backyards. It was an absolutely perfect day. While enjoying this fabulous weather, I was speaking with a neighbor who will be installing a pool this summer. As a mother of four year old twins, my mind immediately went to pool safety.

As you prepare for a summer filled with fun in the sun, I encourage you to read these tips provided from the Pool Safety website:

Staying Close, Being Alert, and Watching Children in and Around the Pool
  • Always watch your children when they are in or near a pool or spa
  • Teach children basic water safety tips
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments
  • Have a portable telephone close by at all times when you or your family are using a pool or spa
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first
  • Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors
Learning and Practicing Water Safety Skills
  • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim
  • Learn to perform CPR on children and adults, and update those skills regularly
  • Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency
Having the Appropriate Equipment for Your Pool or Spa
  • Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
  • Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
  • If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing pools or spas.
  • Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water
  • Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers, and ask your pool service provider if you do not know
  • Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order
  • Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm
I hope you found these tips as useful as I did and you can enter the summer with confidence in your pool safety knowledge! As for me, well, we have signed my children up for their first ever swim lessons. I am not looking forward to this, but know that it is imperative that children be trained to be SAFE!

Hunton for Hooters - a Fight Against Breast Cancer

Hunton for Hooters - a Fight Against Breast Cancer

In my 34 years on this earth, I am lucky enough to say I have never known anyone touched by breast cancer. Amazing, right? My great aunt died of breast cancer before I was born, but other than that, it doesn't run in our family nor have any close, personal friends been diagnosed. YET. I say yet because 1.3 million people are diagnosed annually. I know the odds are one day I could personally face this or a dear friend may and I don't want to wait to do something about it!

I am so thrilled to be part of the Hunton for Hooters team and doing my part in the fight against breast cancer! Our team will be participating in the Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure on May 7th taking place on Brown's Island. The morning is jammed packed with events starting at 7am with survivor photos and conclude at 10:15am with an awards ceremony. In between there is a Kids for a Cure Run, a 5K Competitive Run, and a 5K Recreational Run/Walk...something for everyone to take part in!

Thankfully, I have not only met my goal of raising $100, but have surpassed it with $295.00 raised to date! I am grateful to those who have pledged thus far and can't wait to see the grand total once all is said and done. Our team consists of 11 wonderful women so I am sure we will do an outstanding job of raising funds for this wonderful cause!

If you would like to learn more about the race, please visit: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, or to make a donation, please visit: Komen Donation.

I am looking forward to a day of fun, fight, and festivities! Hope to see you there!

Home Sweet Henrico with Keller Williams Realty is proud to be a part of the fight against breast cancer and to support the local Richmond community.

Market Statistics for Richmond Metro and Henrico County

Market Statistics for Richmond Metro and Henrico County

Wow - the real estate market has really had it's share of ups and downs over the past few years, hasn't it? I personally have experienced everything from paying at the height of the market to losing money on a home when things slowed down. It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride and one that I hope is coming into the home stretch with no more loops!

If you have been curious as to the trends here in the Richmond Real Estate market, then you will be interested to see the chart below. I have compiled some Richmond Metro Market Statistics (which includes Richmond, Chesterfield County, and Henrico County single family homes) and then broke it down into Henrico County Market Statistics and then Glen Allen Market Statistics. To take it a little further, you will see some trends for a couple of our local developments here in Glen Allen.

Please take a look and feel free to contact me with any questions. Want statistics on your individual development? No problem! Just let me know and I would be happy to run the numbers for you!
