Turning a Development into a Neighborhood
I have always been envious of those developments that do things together as a community. You know, the ones who have summer kick-off parties, community yard sales, and even Friday night cocktail hours. There is something so special about people coming together to celebrate nothing more than sharing a fence or belonging to the same HOA.
So, yesterday our little (and new) Henrico County community held it's first ever neighborhood party. It was an Easter celebration complete with a visit from the Easter Bunny himself (an unplanned "initiation" of a new neighbor, HA!), an Easter egg hunt, games with prizes, and of course, food, drink, and most importantly FELLOWSHIP! It was a little chaotic but fun none the less and I think those who actually participated are eagerly awaiting what is coming next!
The thing I realized is that it takes effort and some fun work turning a development into a neighborhood. It takes several people coming together to donate their time to plan an event. It takes others willing to bring a covered dish to share. It also takes willing participants who want more from their development than just four walls and stainless steel appliances. You know...they say it takes a village to raise a child...well, it's kind of the same concept.
We all had a fabulous time yesterday. In fact, the party that was scheduled from 1PM-3PM lingered long past our dinner times and even resulted in some sticking around, ordering pizza, and sharing yet another meal together. Now that is what I call a great start to a neighborhood!
